Cheat Narrows

Cheat Narrows

“The Cheat River, as an undammed river, is one of the natural treasures of West Virginia”

The Cheat River is part of the largest undammed watershed in the Eastern United States.  For us rafters, that means changing water levels everyday.  This is a part of what makes the Cheat special.  Because of the natural flow and seasonal tendencies, the Cheat Narrows has two distinct seasons: Spring and Summer.  Water levels tend to be higher in the Spring and lower in the Summer, however Mother Nature is in control on the Cheat and we can get low water in the Spring and high water in the Summer.  Every day will bring a new water level on a undammed river.

Spring Narrows

Spring generally means higher water and a more exciting ride on the Cheat Narrows.  The Spring Narrows is full of spectacular wave trains and fun and exciting Class III whitewater, such as Rocking Horse, Calamity, and Wind.  You can enjoy the giant boulders, clear water, and natural beauty of this section of river as your guide will be right in the raft with you, telling you when to paddle and when to sit back and relax.  When water levels allow, we will stop at “Jump Rock” to take a plunge into the cool spring waters of the Cheat.  Beginners and experienced paddlers alike will have the opportunity to make a memory on the Cheat Narrows.

Summer Narrows

The summertime Cheat Narrows is a exciting and memorable whitewater experience. The summer Narrows offer 7 miles of gorgeous Class II-III whitewater with crystal clear water, beautiful scenery and plenty of opportunities to get wet. The Narrows is ideal for families with kids as young as 7 as well as Scouts, Youth Groups, and anyone wanting a fun day on the river. The Narrows is a half day trip and we will match the boat size to the water level to give you the best ride for the day. Summertime Narrows can run in Duckies (one man rafts) up to 8 man rafts depending on water level. No matter what the water level, our excellent guides will show you a fabulous summer day on the Cheat Narrows.

WE MATCH THE BOAT SIZE TO THE WATER LEVEL TO GIVE YOU THE BEST RIDE FOR THE DAY

CHECK OUT SOME OF THE OPTIONS YOU MAY ENCOUNTER…

DUCKIES

Duckies are the preferred boat for lower water levels. You will be the master of your own craft with our expert guides showing you the way and helping you out if you get stuck. Duckies are super fun, stable boats that are easy to get in and out of. Many summertime trips will have the option of choosing a duckie, but we will have some water levels where everyone will be in a duckie.

4-6 MAN RAFT

Our mid-sized rafts will accommodate 3-5 guests plus a guide. We always put a guide in the raft with you. This size raft is our standard summer craft. We often pair mid-sized rafts with duckies on summertime trips.

8-10 MAN RAFT

Our large rafts will accommodate 6-9 guests and our our preferred raft for big water days. When river flows are solid and we have large group that wants to stay together in one raft, the big boat is our choice. Once again, we always put a guide in every raft. This is a standard springtime set up.
